The
Beatles released their eighth album “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
in the summer of 1967. The band had already smashed a barrier of musical
innovation a year earlier with their album “Revolver”, with which they
introduced new production techniques and re-defined the pop song. But “Sgt
Pepper” pushed the boat out just that little bit further, they seemed to
suddenly morph in to completely different people and the music bears little
comparison with the likes of “Love Me Do” and “Please Please Me”. Why?
There was a psychedelic explosion going on in the mid/late sixties. Musicians and their fans alike were experimenting with mind-altering substances such as LSD. As a result the “I love you, you love me” type of pop song was drifting further and further in to the past and a new wave of unique and colourful music was emerging.
